An historic settlement in North Dorset, Milborne St Andrew’s earliest written documentation is believed to date back to 901, and the village was recorded again in the Domesday Book of 1086. Less than a mile south of the village is Weatherby Castle, an Iron Age hill fort enclosing roughly 17.5 acres, in which Roman artefacts were unearthed in the 19th Century. Around the same time, Milborne St Andrew was immortalised by Thomas Hardy as ‘Millpond St Jude’s’ in his novel ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, and the tower in his romance ‘Two on a Tower’ is reputed to be Weatherby Castle.
Present-day Milborne St Andrew is a thriving village renowned for its community spirit and wealth of sporting and social clubs. Group activities on offer range from archery, badminton, cricket and tap to bell ringing, am-dram, gardening and folk music. There are also nursery groups, after-school clubs and Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts for children, as well as high-ranked adult and youth football teams.
