Two miles west of the coastal town of Swanage is Langton Matravers, an historic village lined with old stone cottages. First documented in 1206, the name Langton comes from ‘long town’, and Matravers stems from the name of John Mautravers who was the landowner here in 1281. The village was once home to three prep schools, one of which, Durnford, educated Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels.
Langton Matravers’ current primary school, St George’s, dates back to the 19th Century. Also of notable historic interest are Leeson House, a Grade II listed 19th Century home now a field studies centre, and Langton Matravers Museum, once a coach house. Within a National Landscape on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, the varied landscapes and natural points of interest to explore around Langton Matravers are too numerous to list. Not to be missed is Dancing Ledge, a flat section of rock at the base of a small cliff, which appears to ‘dance’ when waves wash over the horizontal surface at certain stages of the tide. At the beginning of the 20th Century, a swimming pool was blasted into the rock here for use by local school children. As the waters of this part of the coast are not safe for swimming, the pool is still in use by locals and visitors alike.
