Take a step into the past and immerse yourself in the rich history of Tolpuddle – a petite thatched village located on the River Piddle. Best known for its political unrest, an infamous Sycamore tree, and community, Tolpuddle has remained an ancient snapshot of 1839 and is home to a close-knit population of simply 420.
Located just 8 miles from Dorset’s county town and home of DOMVS Estate Agents in Dorchester, Tolpuddle is a cultural museum for antiques and artefacts of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. In 1834, six passionate and overworked farm labourers – led by the Methodist George Loveless – attempted to form a trade union in a secret meeting under a sycamore tree to protest the proposed drastic reductions in wages.
Although legal, unions and resistance to working conditions were forcefully discouraged by those in power, and the six members – the Tolpuddle Martyrs – were subsequently deported to Australia as prisoners. After serving over seven years in their new home 9526 miles away from Tolpuddle, public outcry at this injustice resulted in the overturning of their sentences and an open invitation back to England.
Today, every July, thousands of tourists visit the Tolpuddle Martrys Festival, and the plethora of its historical landmarks, to relive the trials and tribulations that the Martyrs faced, and to celebrate our democratic right to trade unions
As previously mentioned, the picturesque village is just a ten-minute drive from the county town of Dorset. So if the cultural museum doesn’t quite take your fancy, the traditional yet modern shopping and restaurant highstreets in neighbouring villages such as Puddletown and Dorchester are just a short drive down the A35.
