One of West Dorset’s largest villages, Crossways is also a relatively young one; it was little more than a hamlet consisting of a few bungalows and cottages as late as the early 1930s.
In 1937, an airfield, which came to be known as RAF Warmwell, was completed and went on to play an important role in World War II.
In later years, as the extraction, by mineral companies, of valuable gravel and sand from the area around the village increased, the Air Ministry’s operational areas gradually decreased, but the airfield’s legacy still lingers in the village today.
Crossways has continued to grow in size – and spirit – since the 1970s. Today, the village is home to a vibrant community and a range of amenities including a well-regarded first school, a village hall, shop, post office and a licensed members club aptly named ‘The Spitfire Club’.
In the neighbouring village of Warmwell is a holiday park offering swimming and snow sports facilities and, to the other end of Crossways, Moreton village provides a public house and rail connections to the county town of Dorchester and London Waterloo beyond.
