Maiden Newton is a large, bustling village less than ten miles north-west of the county town of Dorchester. The village is one of few in Dorset to boast its own train station, which lies on the Heart of Wessex line connecting Weymouth and Bristol via Dorchester, Yeovil and Bath. Opened in 1857, Maiden Newton Railway Station has since featured in an episode of the BBC series ‘To the Manor Born‘.
The station is just one of approximately 35 buildings and sites in Maiden Newton designated by English Heritage as being of special architectural or historic interest. Though evidence of prehistoric human presence exists in the surrounding countryside, and Roman remains have been discovered in and around the village, the first written documentation of Maiden Newton is in the Domesday Book of 1086. The village is also known to have hosted four visits from King John in the 13th Century, which, it has been speculated, suggests the presence of a large – and, presumably, grand – residence sadly no longer in existence.
