Chideock is a petite, hilly village located between Bridport and Lyme Regis and has much to offer. Alongside the neighbouring seaside hamlet of Seatown, the village lies in an exceptional recognised National Landscape comprised of public and farmed land, breathtaking cliffs and stunning sea views.
The village of Chideock has a plentiful and interesting history. In the 18th century, the coast between Seatown and Charmouth belonged to the infamous Chideock Gang of local smugglers. The gang used the Golden Cap as their lookout post. Chideock also contains the ruins of what was once a royalist castle destroyed during the Civil War.
In 1086, Chideock was recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Cidihoc’. In 1379–80 John de Chideock, a manorial lord, built Chideock Castle just north of the village, but during the Middle Ages ownership passed to the Catholic Arundell family, who used it to provide refuge for priests and loyal followers during subsequent religious persecution.
With all this to see, there are also two very well run pubs within Chideock village – The George Inn and The Clock House Inn – which serve excellent food and drink to refresh you after all that sightseeing. Down at Seatown, you’ll find The Anchor Inn right next to the beach.
