In a National Landscape just over nine miles from the county town of Dorchester and approximately five miles from Blandford Forum lies the village of Milton Abbas. Considered one of the most picturesque villages in Dorset, Milton Abbas has a history unlike any other.
Lord Milton, First Earl of Dorchester and owner of Milton Abbey decided, in the late 18th Century, that the neighbouring village of Middleton was disturbing his rural idyll. Before raising the entire village to the ground and landscaping the site, Lord Milton commissioned architect Sir William Chambers and landscape architect Capability Brown to design a new village, Milton Abbas, in a nearby wooded valley. The Georgian Gothic style church of St James and 36 near-identical thatched cottages were built and most of the villagers re-homed.
Today, Milton Abbas is a thriving village with a post office, public house and busy calendar of events and community groups. In celebration of its founding, the village hosts a famous 18th Century street fair every other summer, attracting thousands of visitors. Boasting no less than 75 listed buildings and 1,320 acres of listed parkland surrounding the abbey itself, Milton Abbas is well worth a visit at any time of year.
