Iwerne Minster is a small village and parish on the edge of the Blackmore Vale, positioned halfway between the towns of Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum. It is located within the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Down National Landscapes, with the River Iwerne flowing from a spring in the heart of the village.
Iwerne Minster House was built in 1796 by the Bowyer Bower family (who owned the village and estate of Iwerne Minster since 1645), on the site of their original manor. Their family crest, the Talbot, is still represented in the name of the Iwerne Minster village pub. Iwerne Minster stayed in the Bowyer Bower family until 1876, when they sold the estate to George Glyn, 2nd Baron Wolverton.
The original Minister is now known as St Mary’s Church and was built by the Normans in 1100 on the site of another church. In the Domesday Book in 1086, the village was recorded as Euneministre. It was in Sixpenny Hundred and the lord and tenant-in-chief was Shaftesbury Abbey.
