About Buckland Newton

On the edge of the Dorset Downs within a National Landscape is Buckland Newton, a small-but-sprawling village with a long history. Prehistoric human settlement is evident in the surrounding countryside, notably Bronze Age barrows at Gales Hill and the Iron Age hill fort at Dungeon Hill. Within the village itself, the Grade I listed Holy Rood Parish Church, though restored in the 19th Century, boasts a 15th Century west tower, nave and aisles, a 13th Century chancel and fragments of a 12th Century sculpture believed to be evidence of an earlier structure. Of the church tower’s six bells, the oldest has been dated to around 1380.

Today, Buckland Newton has much to offer besides a fascinating history. The primary school, shop/post office and public house are at the heart of the community, as is the village hall, which plays host to a wide variety of activities. Clubs and classes available in the village range from art and am-dram to gardening and cricket, and the community hosts a village fete every August. For those keen to explore the glorious countryside beyond the village, there are no less than 11 Sites of Nature Conservation Interest nearby, as well as areas of Ancient Woodland – and all little more than 20 minutes’ drive north of the county town of Dorchester.
