Winterborne St Martin, known locally as Martinstown, is a popular village less than five miles south-west of the county town of Dorchester. A pretty stretch of the South Winterborne stream runs through the length of the village, crossed by narrow bridges leading to the front doors of many of the historic cottages lining the main street. Martinstown has twice won the ‘Best Kept Village in Dorset’ award in the large village category. Driving through it, particularly in Spring when the village is awash with glorious daffodils, it’s easy to see why.
Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, Martinstown is surrounded by Bronze Age hill barrows and is in close proximity to Maiden Castle, the largest and most complex Iron Age hill fort in Britain. Central to the village itself is the 12th Century parish church of St Martin. After 100 years of silence, five new church bells rang out in 1947 in commemoration of those who gave their lives during the war.
Today, Martinstown benefits from a well-regarded public house, a local store/post office and a thriving village hall. Local clubs include a walking group, bell ringers and the community panto, and the village is particularly well known for its successful cricket club.
