Towards the upper end of the Frome Valley, in a National Landscape, is Cattistock, a small village roughly eight miles north-west of the county town of Dorchester. The sleepy, rural atmosphere of this pretty village belies its enthusiastic community spirit, which supports thriving cricket, football, badminton and lawn tennis clubs and a community library, as well as realising numerous fairs and events throughout the year. Possibly the most famous is the Dorset Knob Throwing, centred around games and competitions involving the small, round, crispy bread rolls known as Dorset Knobs, produced by Moore’s Biscuits. When in 2016, the event attracted over 5,000 visitors, organisers decided it had outgrown the village, and moved it to Kingston Maurward Animal Park & Gardens just outside Dorchester.
At the heart of Cattistock is the parish church of St Peter & St Paul, built in 1872 by architects Sir George Gilbert Scott and George Gilbert Scott Junior, his son. Famous for its striking, perpendicular-style tower, visible for miles around, the church has been dubbed ‘The Cathedral of the Valley’ and occupies the site of a former 12th Century church built by the monks of Milton Abbey. The surrounding village is made up of historic and more modern homes lining pretty, winding streets, dotted along which are a local shop/post office, a tea room, a popular public house, a busy village hall and an outdoor children’s play area.
