On the banks of the River Piddle, just over four miles from Dorchester, the large village of Puddletown was originally known, more logically, as ‘Piddletown’ and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Due to the connotation later associated with the word ‘piddle’, the name of the village was officially changed to Puddletown by the local council – supposedly rather begrudgingly – in the late 1950s.
Like many places in Dorset, Puddletown served as inspiration for Thomas Hardy; it is the village on which ‘Weatherbury’ was based in his novel ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’. Human activity around Puddletown is evidenced long before Hardy’s time, by 30 prehistoric long barrows, later Celtic strip lynchets and early 17th Century water meadows. Within the village itself are no less than 56 buildings listed by Historic England as being of historic or architectural interest, including the Grade I listed Waterston Manor and Church of St Mary.
Today, Puddletown is a popular, well-equipped village offering a real sense of community. Amenities include first and middle schools, a highly-regarded public house, a local store/post office, village hall, recreation ground, community library, doctors and veterinary surgeries and even an antiquarian bookshop. On the outskirts of the village, Athelhampton House and Gardens, one of England’s finest Tudor manors, is not to be missed, and expansive Puddletown Forest provides endless outdoor escapism opportunities for mountain bikers, dog-walkers and families alike.
