DOMVS’ Children’s Writing Competition Returns for its Fifth Year

DOMVS, in collaboration with Academy and Emmy Award winner Lord Julian Fellowes, will be announcing the winner of their annual writing competition at an awards ceremony next Thursday 18th January held at Shire Hall, Dorchester.

Story House: The DOMVS Children’s Writing Prize is an annual creative writing competition designed to nurture and celebrate the literary talents of young minds aged 5-12 in Dorset. Schools throughout the county are invited to participate, and DOMVS has received its highest number of entries for the competition, which is now in its fifth year.

Polly Greenway, CEO of DOMVS says: “The Story House competition is now in its fifth year and continues to go from strength to strength. It has grown from being for Dorchester schools to now open to pupils from all schools across Dorset. We are great supporters of literary arts and creative writing, and the competition is an exciting opportunity to encourage young minds to explore their imagination, sharpen their writing skills, and be recognised amongst some of the area’s brightest talent. As always, we are immensely honoured and thankful for Lord & Lady Fellowes, who have supported the competition since its inception.”

Each year, Lord Fellowes ignites the writers’ creative spark by providing the first line of the story, which was this year: “I always thought of Alison as my best friend until the day I discovered she disliked me.” All entrants are invited to attend the awards ceremony with a member of their family, where the winner, runner-up and a highly commended entrant will be announced and honoured with certificates and prizes. The competition will be judged and awarded by Lord & Lady Fellowes.

Lord Julian Fellowes, local actor, novelist, film director, and screenwriter comments “The fact is, we regard literacy as one of the major keys to fulfilment and achievement in later life for these children. The Story House competition not only acknowledges individual achievements, it also inspires the entire community to appreciate and support the budding talents of Dorset’s young storytellers, who are our literary stars of tomorrow.”

Participation in the Story House competition is open to schools across Dorset, in which students are encouraged to submit hand-written short stories in English based on a thought-provoking prompt. Entries for next year’s competition will open in September 2024.
