DOMVS Reports Increase in Demand for Homes with Annexes as Buyers Seek Flexibility, Income and Multi-Generational Living

DOMVS Reports Increase in Demand for Homes with Annexes

DOMVS, the award-winning estate agency serving Dorset and beyond, has seen a marked rise in demand for homes with annexes. Spurred by shifting lifestyle needs, rising living costs, and a desire for more adaptable homes, buyers are increasingly seeking properties with self-contained accommodation.

In response, DOMVS has launched a dedicated online resource:

A Shift in Buyer Requirements

Previously considered a niche, annexes are now being actively pursued for a range of uses, including multi-generational living, rental income, home working, guest accommodation, or simply future-proofing a property.

The most notable rise in buyer requirements has come from those seeking accommodation for multi-generational living. While this is not a new trend – the ONS recorded a 17% increase over the decade in the 2021 Census – DOMVS believes it has accelerated even more sharply in recent years, particularly since the pandemic and the onset of the cost-of-living crisis.

A recent survey by Stiltz Homelifts of UK homeowners aged 35 to 54 found that 86.6% said the cost-of-living crisis makes multi-generational living more appealing, and 60.1% would consider living with family members. DOMVS has certainly observed similar sentiments among those registering interest in available properties, with many buyers looking to house elderly parents, grown-up children or, more lightheartedly, to provide some separation from noisy teenagers.

DOMVS Launches Dedicated Annexe Property Page

To meet this demand, DOMVS has launched a new section of its website to showcase homes with annexes across Dorset and neighbouring areas. The page also highlights how these homes can support modern lifestyles, offering options for income generation, independent living, or enhanced work-life balance.

Polly Greenway, CEO of DOMVS, commented:
“We are seeing buyers increasingly prioritise versatility and long-term value, and homes with annexes offer space, privacy, and adaptability for evolving needs. It is not just about square footage any more, but about creating a lifestyle that works now and into the future.

“‘Multi-generational living’ is a term we are hearing much more frequently. We are also seeing interest from those with work-from-home needs or family members who want greater independence. For many, a property with an annexe provides the perfect solution.

“We believe that homes with annexes may also command a 20 to 30% premium, especially when there is potential to generate consistent income or reduce care-related costs.”
